Postdoctoral Research Position

The Montreal Diabetes Research Center (MDRC) is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate. The candidate will conduct experiments in the laboratories of Drs Poitout and Prentki and will investigate the role of glucolipotoxicity in the etiology of type 2 diabetes using rodent models of beta-cell failure.

The candidate should have a PhD in biology. Experience with rodent models of diabetes is preferable. The position is available immediately and is tenable for up to three years.

Project coordinator at the CIHR Team in Aboriginal Antidiabetic Medicines

The CIHR Team in Aboriginal Antidiabetic Medicines is searching for a highly qualified person to coordinate projects in its central pharmacology laboratory that aim to evaluate the antidiabetic potential of plant extracts and fractions thereof.

Requirements: Hold a PhD degree in pharmacology, biochemistry, cell biology or other relevant disciplines and have at least 2 years of postdoctoral training experience. The candidate should have experience with in vitro bioassays (cell-based and cell-free) and in vivo animal models dealing with metabolic syndrome, obesity and/or diabetes. Demonstrable supervising experience is also required as are excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit. Respect of traditional medicine and knowledge is a must.

Additional assets include proficiency in science writing in English and capacity of verbal and written expression in French. Applicants willing to learn French will also be considered. Knowledge of natural health products and good laboratory practice as well as open-mindedness toward complementary and alternative medicine will be viewed as additional qualities.

Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Team leader, the applicant will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating all major scientific activities of the laboratory. This includes elaborating research protocols, developing new research methodologies and trouble-shooting established ones. The successful applicant will help the Team leader to ensure the preparation and upkeep of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the respect by the laboratory’s research personnel of good laboratory practices (GLP) within the limits of the academic environment. The applicant will also compile, analyse and help interpret data and ensure the proper statistical analysis and data presentation and assist graduate students in the same. He/she will also oversee the proper scheduling and respect of weekly lab meetings. The applicant will write scientific reports and manuscripts and may assist the Team leader in grant writing.

Salary, benefits and duration of employment: Annual salary will be determined according to CIHR guidelines for postdoctoral trainees taking into account the major degree held and the experience of the candidate. The position will last for two years starting in March 2009 with a run-in trial period of three months beginning in January 2009. The position may be renewable thereafter depending on research funding.

The Manager, Research is responsible for the management and implementation of various research-related processes and ongoing activities, to ensure optimal and efficient operation of the Association�s high quality research programs. This position also plays a key role in monitoring, tracking and translating research knowledge and outcomes for the Association.

Responsibilities: Manage the Association�s grants and awards research program and related peer review activities, including the external and internal review processes. Provide operational support to the Research Committee Chairs, Vice Chairs and Members regarding grants and awards processes, policy requirements, etc. Implement components of the research strategic plan, as required. Manage the updating of the Grants and Awards guides and applications to reflect policy changes and the current research strategic plan. Ensure timely dissemination of such information (e.g. posting on website). Draft and distribute correspondence related to the grants and awards programs (e.g. research competition notification letters, etc.). Prepare and manage budgets and financial reporting requirements for areas of responsibility; monitor and track expenses and variances on a regular basis. Manage and maintain the Association�s customized research database and related applications (e.g. Common CV). Manage all system upgrades and changes as needed to reflect the research strategic plan.

Qualifications: Ability to work on complex integrated activities with competing deadlines; strong project management skills. Experience working with professional/expert volunteers. Knowledge of academic/institutional research and peer review processes. Experience in complex financial management (e.g. annual budgets, payment schedules, external partnerships, etc.). Superior written and verbal communication skills; French language skills considered an asset. University degree in life or health sciences at a BSc level (MSc preferred). 5-7 years working in a research environment and/or in the charitable health sector. Experience in research-related peer review processes. Experience working with professional/expert volunteers.
