World Diabetes Day
November 14

At the initiative of the International Diabetes Federation, November 14 has been declared World Diabetes Day by the United Nations in December 2006. This date evokes the birthday of Canadian physician Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin in 1922 with his colleague Charles Best.

For a second year, Montreal Diabetes Research Center and Technople Angus will light in blue the Centre des Biotechnologies Angus I building, referring to the blue circle, world symbol for diabetes.

The theme for this year is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents. Statistics presented by Diabte Qubec claim that nearly 500,000 children under the age of 15 suffer from diabetes around the world. As it is the case in adults, the incidence of diabetes in children is constantly increasing. The prevalence of diabetes worldwide is increasing at near epidemic rate (over 250 million people estimated to be affected) therefore diabetes is a major public health problem. Along with its complications (cardio-vascular diseases, blindness, amputations) diabetes mobilizes between 2.5% and 15% of annual governmental resources devoted to health. Costs are further increased by the facts that diabetes is one of the most disabling chronic diseases and that people with diabetes see their life expectancy reduced by a decade.

Mobilization of all the stakeholders, patients, physicians, researchers and governments is required to generate a significant impact on the global diabetes epidemic. Concerted efforts must come quickly for both efficacious prevention and treatment.
